Who Does Diabetes Affect?
Diabetes can affect anyone from any walk of life. However, it is important to note that certain groups are much more susceptible to getting the disease than others. Let's talk about some of the factors that can give you a higher risk for developing diabetes.
First of all, it's no secret that having extra weight on your body can be the precipitating factor to getting diabetes. Some experts believe that having a body mass index of more than 25 is an indicator for diabetes. Having a lot of extra weight around the stomach or waist area is even more of an indication that someone is at risk for the disease.
Leading a sedentary lifestyle is also another problematic issue that can lead to diabetes. Being over 45 years old is another predisposing factor, although people over 65 are at an increased risk. If you have a family history of type 2 diabetes, be on lookout for low sugar issues in the future if you don’t lead a healthy lifestyle.
If you are someone who has experienced gestational diabetes during pregnancy, that could put you at future risk for developing type 2 diabetes. In addition, certain ethnic groups are at a higher risk of developing the disease. They include African-Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans and Latinos.
Having low HDL cholesterol, high triglyceride levels and high blood pressure can also predispose you to being at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. As with any major medical condition, you can do a lot to prevent it by leading a healthy lifestyle including diet and exercise.
