7 High-Protein Foods With The Lowest Calories
A healthy diet for most diabetics includes plenty of protein.
Protein fuels the body, encourages muscle growth, stabilizes your blood sugar and keeps you full.
With some protein sources, however, calories can add up quickly.
Here are seven high-protein foods that are also low in calories. Pair them with a serving of vegetables for a nutrient-rich meal or snack.
1. Egg whites
Low-carb dieters are all-too familiar with the egg-based breakfast, but egg whites are an even healthier option. A standard serving size of egg whites (3 tablespoons) is only 25 calories and 5 grams of protein.
2. Tuna
If you're opting for fish at dinner, try tuna instead of fattier fishes like salmon. A 3 oz. serving of tuna has about 22 grams of protein and only 99 calories. Canned tuna with baby carrots or broccoli spears is also a great low-calorie, high-protein snack.
3. Cottage cheese
A cup of non-fat cottage cheese has about 15 grams of protein and only 100 calories. Topped with some low-carb fruit like berries, it's the perfect breakfast or snack.
4. Shrimp
Shrimp isn't popular with everyone, but it's a good seafood option you can add to salads or stir-fry. A 100-gram serving is about 24 grams of protein and 99 calories. Shrimp is high in cholesterol, however, so be mindful of your portion sizes.
5. Turkey breast
As far as lunch meats go, turkey breast is one of the best options for dieters. Four slices of roasted turkey breast (opt for roasted to avoid excess sodium) is about 60 calories and 9 grams of protein.
6. Tofu
Tofu may be lacking in flavor, but it's a healthy protein option for Meatless Monday or for vegetarian dieters. An 84-gram serving (about 1/8 of a block) of tofu is only 52 calories and 6 grams of protein.
7. Tempeh
Another popular option for non-meat eaters, tempeh is higher in calories than tofu but still packs the protein. A 50-gram serving is only 115 calories and offers about 10 grams of protein.
