A Compound Found in Human Saliva Speeds up Healing

Unfortunately, for diabetics healing is a very slow process if they heal at all most ulcers do not ever completely heal. Developing foot ulcers or diabetic ulcers in general for many diabetics is not only something they have to deal with on a regular basis but also these slow/non healing ulcers can also be very painful.

How the Compound May Help Healing

“Scientists found that histatin; a small protein in saliva previously only believed to kill bacteria was responsible for the healing.” Using dishes the scientists created an artificial wound in each of the dishes by scratching a piece of the cell tissue. The dishes were then divided into two groups in one group the artificial wound was treated with plain isotonic fluid. The second group was treated with human salvia.

The scientists returned to the dishes 16 hours later and the wounds in the dishes that had been treated with the isotonic solution a very small portion of the wound had closed. In the dishes treated with human salvia, the wounds were almost completely closed within that 16-hour period!

Next, the scientist stated working the process of determining which compound in the salvia provided the healing. The compound they concluded was the healing compound is called histatin.

This is great news for diabetics the compound is not available yet but should be in the near future after clinical studies on humans have been completed.
