Psoriasis-Diabetes link strengthened by new research
A new Danish cohort study suggests the link between diabetes and psoriasis is even stronger than previously thought.
Findings of the research, published online in Diabetes Care, showed that patients with psoriasis have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Not only that, but the worse the psoriasis, the greater the diabetes risk, researchers found.
Dr. Joel M. Gelfand from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, and his colleagues conducted the research, which supports their earlier research published in 2012 that found psoriasis to be an independent risk factor for diabetes.
The study
The study population involved more than 4 million subjects and about 52,000 patients with either mild or severe psoriasis. Researchers found that, after accounting for age, sex and other lifestyle factors, patients without psoriasis had a lesser risk for developing diabetes. Patients with the most severe psoriasis had the greatest risk for the disease.
The study did not account for obesity, but Gefland says other research indicates that body mass index is not a factor in influencing the psoriasis-diabetes link.
Better screening needed
Lead author Usman Khalid, MD, from Gentofte Hospital, Hellerup, Denmark, told Medscape Medical News that better screening and more education are needed in order to help patients more effectively manage psoriasis.
"Clinicians need to educate and assist their [psoriasis] patients in lifestyle modification, including diet and body weight management, in order to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and its complications," said Dr. Khalid.
Early screening and treatment of cardiovascular risk factors can help these patients to avoid long-term complications, Khalid noted.
