Paula Deen and family down 178 pounds, taking diabetes seriously

Food Network star Paula Deen jokes a lot about her love of butter.

But as much as the warm and bubbly 65-year-old Southern chef loves to kid, she's taking her diabetes seriously--and so is her family.

According to People magazine, the Deen family has lost a collective 178 pounds over the past year, and they're all committed to staying healthy in support of Paula, who now refers to her diabetes as "a blessing."

Moderation, please

Deen says that her temptations include things like butter, cream cheese and fried food, but that she's able to cope with cravings by allowing herself small indulgences without going overboard.

"It's all about moderation," Deen told Woman's Day magazine. "I just needed to learn to eat a normal portion size and not overindulge."

She also notes that she's had to change the cooking style that made her so well-loved in the first place, but that she found inspiration by thinking about her family.

"I want to be here for my grandchildren," she said. "I think about them every day. My daddy was dead at 40. My mother was dead at 44. And look - I'm 65 and I'm still here! Go 65!"

Weight-loss wisdom

Deen says that losing weight has been about cutting carbs and eating more vegetables. She also says that putting down her fork and "having a conversation" helps her avoid overeating, noting that it takes the brain 20 minutes to realize the stomach is full.

Life-altering changes aside, Deen is hopeful for the future.

"Waking up every morning is very exciting for me, to see what the day is going to bring," she added.
