Link Discovered Between Childhood Obesity and Diabetes in Adulthood

Childhood & Pre Diabetes

Studies have proven that obese children can begin to develop symptoms of metabolic syndrome or more commonly known as pre diabetes as early as age 13. If the pre diabetes continues to develop, the child will be diagnosed with type 3 diabetes. In addition, these children also show signs of high blood press, high cholesterol levels and other cardiovascular conditions.

Clinical Study

Numerous studies have been performed over the past few years. One of the most recent had 2,368 Caucasian and African American girls who were eight to ten years in age when the study started and the researchers followed them until they were eighteen to nineteen years old.

The Study Results

Of the 2,368 participants, one to two percent of the African American girls had already developed high pressure and some degree of insulin resistance. While 0.5 percent of the Caucasian girls in the study had developed high blood pressure, no information on whether they became insulin resistance was available from that study. However, there was a six percent chance that all of the girls would develop high blood pressure and insulin resistance if they remained obese.

Conclusion

As a result of childhood obesity not only are both girls and boys at a high risk for developing metabolic syndrome or type 2 diabetes they are also at risk for several adult diseases including the high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, and respiratory problems just to mention a few. Childhood obesity is a growing problem.
