Research Says Legumes Could Reduce Type 2 Diabetes Risk
Research shows that a high consumption of legumes significantly reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This low glycemic index food is often closely associated with diabetic diets for lowering glucose and improving health. A new study shows that a high intake diet of lentils lowers type 2 diabetes risk by 33 percent.
The study, conducted by a team at the Unit of Human Nutrition at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili in Spain, investigated the association between legume consumption and diabetes in people at increased risk of cardiovascular disease. A total of 3,349 participants were included in the study.
Participants in the study did not have type 2 diabetes and were at high risk of cardiovascular disease.
They were followed for just over four years. Low consumption of legumes was defined as less than 60 grams of legumes per week. High consumption was defined as 28.75 daily grams of legumes (about double the low consumption rate).
The study found that those with a higher intake of legumes were 35 percent less likely to develop type 2 diabetes versus their counterparts with a low intake. Lentils were most strongly associated with the lower risk, but other legumes likely played a significant role as well.
The researchers also found that replacing half a daily serving of protein and carbohydrate rich foods with legumes was closely correlated with a reduced risk of diabetes.
