Substance In Coffee Could Delay Diabetes Onset
New research has found that substances in coffee may delay onset of diabetes. The research on laboratory mice found that one specific compound appears to improve cell function and insulin sensitivity and other compounds may also be effective in preventing or treating type 2 diabetes.
The research, published in the Journal of Natural Products for the American Chemical Society, suggests that drinking three or four cups of coffee a day can reduce type 2 diabetes risk. The findings were significant in that they discounted caffeine as the compound responsible. This study builds on a previous study by the team.
Another compound in coffee, cafestol, increased glucose uptake just as well as a common antidiabetic drug.
In this study, they found that the compound also delays the onset of diabetes in type 2 diabetic mice. They did so by dividing a group of genetically diabetes-prone mice into three groups. Two of the groups were given differing doses of cafestol and the other was given nothing. After ten weeks, both sets of cafestol mice had lower glucose levels and improved insulin secretion versus the mice who were given nothing. Hypoglycemia also did not happen in the mice given cafestol, further bolstering the findings.
The researchers believe that daily consumption of cafestol via coffee may help delay the onset of type 2 diabetes and that cafestol could be isolated as a treatment for diabetes prevention.
