Whey protein can help stabilize blood sugar levels

Adding some whey powder to your morning smoothie could help stave off diabetes, according to a new study.

Researchers from the American Chemical Society report that whey protein, which is found in dairy products and is also sold in powdered form, can lower the amount of fatty acids in the blood after a meal, as well as boost the specific types of amino acids that raise insulin production.

Type of protein matters

The study was conducted on obese volunteers who were non-diabetic. Participants were given a meal of soup and bread, along with one type of protein either from whey, gluten, casein (a milk protein) or cod.

Subjects who ate the meals supplemented with whey showed slower stomach emptying than the other subjects.

"Studies have suggested that whey protein can lower the amount of fat and increase insulin, which clears glucose in the blood, keeping sugar levels where they're supposed to be," a press release on the study reports.


According to the Mayo Clinic, whey protein may also help to relieve allergy symptoms, reduce appetite and enhance muscle mass and strength - which can promote weight loss.
