Coffee Drinking Tied to Risk in Type 1 Diabetes
Adults with type 1 diabetes who consume five cups or more of coffee per day have an increased risk for metabolic syndrome, a new study says. The study was conducted in Finland and considered adults with type 1 diabetes to determine potential associates between coffee consumption and associated diabetic symptoms.
The study was led by Per-Henrik Groop, professor of nephrology at the University of Helsinki using data from the Finnish Diabetic Nephropathy Study. It included 1,040 adults with type 1 diabetes, divided into four groups according to average coffee consumption rates with results adjusted by average age.
Metabolic syndrome frequency increased with coffee consumption amounts.
Those who did not drink coffee at all were in the lowest rate group and those drinking the most in the highest. Non-consumers were about 51 percent likely to have metabolic syndrome while low and moderate consumers (less than 3 cups per day and less than 5 per day) had metabolic syndrome at 64 and 65 percent respectively. High consumers were 70 percent likely to have high frequency of metabolic syndrome. All after adjusting for mean age, sex, energy intake, alcohol intake, and more.
“Moderate and high coffee consumption is associated with an increased risk of metabolic syndrome, while any level of coffee consumption is associated with higher odds or fulfilling the blood pressure-component of [metabolic syndrome],” the researchers wrote. “Moreover, increasing coffee intake is associated with higher eGFR. Whether habitual coffee consumption will have any negative or beneficial effects on health outcomes, in this population of patients with type 1 diabetes, will be assessed in future studies.”
