Fasting Diet May Reverse Diabetes
Researchers have put mice on a specific fasting diet, causing the mice to reverse their diabetes symptoms and restore pancreas function. The findings could indicate a method for tricking the body into "rebooting" its pancreatic function.
The fast-mimicking diet attempts to trick the body into a "fasting mode" for a few days a month. The University of California team says the diet seems to have reversed both Type 1 and type 2 diabetes in mice. The team's lead says this seems to have triggered the pancreas "to use some kind of developmental reprogramming."
The fast-mimicking diet has been researched for many things.
The diet has been researched for multiple sclerosis, heart disease, and weight loss. Variations of the diet have been found effective for many things, research has found, but always within strict parameters.
The research team says that human testing would be their next step in verifying the diet's efficacy, but simulated tests in petri dishes have been promising. The diet does require very specific caloric intake measurements, food types, and time intervals. Making it very much a "don't try this at home" option.
The researchers are excited that the testing seems to have proven that cells can be reprogrammed without genetic intervention. Clinical trial preparations are underway.
