Acetohexamide
No matter how hard they try, some diabetics are just not able to keep their condition in balance with diet alone. In such cases, it is often necessary for their physician to prescribe certain medications to assist in regulating their glucose levels. Acetohexamide is one of those medicines.
This medication is not meant for treating type 1 diabetes due to the fact that the pancreas must be able to produce insulin in order for this medication to be effective. This particular drug works to stimulate the pancreas into producing insulin and also in helping it to be used in its most efficient manner. For these reasons, it can only be prescribed for cases of type 2 diabetes.
But Acetohexamide is not for everyone. For individuals who are experiencing or have experienced liver disease, kidney disease, thyroid conditions or heart disease, you should consult with your doctor before being prescribed this medication. Those individuals who are also experiencing diabetic ketoacidosis should also avoid this medication.
It is also possible that this medication can cause episodes of both hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia. If either situation occurs, you should treat it in the same manner that you would treat a normal episode.
The normal regimen for this medicine is for it to be taken at the beginning of the day with your first meal and a glass of water. The only time that you should refrain from your dosage is if you are experiencing a fever, infection or a general condition of not feeling well.
Dosage should be restricted to one per day, but if an individual misses a dosage they can make it up as long as it is not close to their next scheduled dosage.
