Research: Salt Intake Tied To Diabetes Risk

A new Swedish study has found that the risks of developing type 2 diabetes are closely associated with salt intake. Research findings were presented to the European Association for the Study of Diabetes by lead researcher Bahareh Rasouli, PhD. The study found that the development of latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) was also tied to salt intake.

The findings suggested that many adults diagnosed with type 2 diabetes are actually suffering from LADA, which may mean they are not receiving the right treatments.

The higher the sodium intake, the higher the diabetes and LADA risks, the study found.

The current American Heart ASsociation recommendations for sodium (salt) intake are about 2,400 milligrams per day maximum (6 grams). The study found that many Europeans with pre-diabetes and diabetes or who are at risk of those have an intake of up to 2,870 mg per day while most of the healthy persons in the study were at or below 2,354 mg/day.

The study drew on data from the Swedish-based ESTRID study of people with type 2 diabetes, LADA, and matched controls. Most salt intake was likely from processed meats, a lower intake of fruits and vegetables, and a higher rate of physical inactivity.

Dr. Rasouli and her group plan to further assess genetic interactions with diet and to look at the relationship between high-risk lifestyle factors.
