Diabetes Management, Down to the Toes
When you have diabetes – either type 1 or type 2 – a swollen foot can quickly lead to more dangerous complications. One of the keys to preventing complications like neuropathy or amputation is early detection.
Diabetes technology startup Siren Care is tackling this challenge head on with their latest product: the Smart Sock.
What is the Smart Sock?
Siren Care has woven temperature sensors into the very fibers of these new Smart Socks. These sensors collect data from the wearers feet in real time – broadcasting all the information on the socks' accompanying mobile app, of course.
For diabetics, even small injuries on the foot can lead to big problems. This is why the socks also alert wearers when they sense any dramatic change in temperature, encouraging them to see a doctor and prevent potential complications.
“It could be something as simple as you have a shoelace tucked into your shoe and don’t feel it and you can get an injury from that,” co-founder Ran Ma told TechCrunch.
The Details
The Smart Sock is not yet available for purchase, though it is available for preorder on Siren Care's website. The socks come in a pack of seven pairs, and each pair is meant to last about six months.
And if you're worried about energy use or regular care, Siren Care's one step ahead of you. The socks are only “on” while being worn, and they immediate go into an energy-efficient “sleep mode” when you take them off. Also, the socks are machine washable (even despite their smart capabilities).
“Our SirenSmart Textile technology is able to incorporate a number of sensors and electronics, including moisture sensors, pressure sensors, light sensors, LEDs, RFIDs, MCU, BLE, etc. seamlessly into fabric,” said Ma.
Wearable tech has been a growing trend for the last few years, particularly in the form of jewelry like Fitbit or Ringly. Siren Care can introduce wearable tech in an entirely new way – and a way that may even save lives.
