Patients Who Reverse Diabetes And Keep Weight Down Can Remain Diabetes-Free
Diabetic patients able to reverse their condition - when combined with keeping their weight down - can remain diabetes-free afterward.
According to a new the study from Newcastle University, these types of results are possible for patients who have endured type 2 diabetes for up to 10 years. The researchers claim that losing weight is instrumental in reversing the disease because it removes fat from the pancreas, helping the production of insulin return to normal.
“What we have shown is that it is possible to reverse your diabetes, even if you have had the condition for a long time, up to around 10 years,” said Ron Taylor, lead author of the study. “If you have had the diagnosis for longer than that, then don't give up hope - major improvement in blood sugar control is possible.”
Lose weight, lose diabetes
Research has shown that patients recently diagnosed with diabetes should implement a healthy diet right away. Results from this latest study support the claim that a proper diet, which can help patients lose weight and keep it off, can reverse diabetes - even for those that have dealt with it for a decade.
The researchers noted that even though the volunteers in the study remained overweight, they still were able to shed enough pounds during the trial to enable normal insulin production.
"The study also answered the question that people often ask me - if I lose the weight and keep the weight off, will I stay free of diabetes? The simple answer is yes,” said Taylor. "Interestingly, even though all our volunteers remained obese or overweight, the fat did not drift back to clog up the pancreas. This supports our theory of a Personal Fat Threshold. If a person gains more weight than they personally can tolerate, then diabetes is triggered, but if they then lose that amount of weight then they go back to normal.”
