New Diabetes App Keeps You Accountable to Strangers
There are plenty of diabetes apps that allow you to track your blood sugar or record your meals in a food diary, but the new One Drop app (for iOS) encourages you to track your information to foster more community and support among diabetics at large.
Co-founder of Razorfish - a digital marketing agency - and a type-1 diabetic, Jeff Dachis helped to develop the app after looking for ways to manage his condition and coming up short.
“All I got was a pat on the back and a prescription and sent on my way," Dachis told Tech Crunch. "I was mad. I didn’t feel like I was being cared for.”
The four key components of diabetes management
One Drop aims to address what Dachis considers the four key components of diabetes management: glucose monitoring, food logging, insulin medication and activity tracking.
The app allows users to input data on all of these areas, while also enabling strangers to anonymously "like" others' status updates, send stickers and offer words of motivation or encouragement.
"Notifications pop up to keep you motivated and to remind you that you are awesome," the app's website states. "With data from everyone in the One Drop community, everyone contributes and everyone learns."
While the app is currently free, a monthly subscription plan might soon be in place, Dachis said.
"There’s a potential for half a billion people coming online with diabetes in the world," he noted. "We spend half a trillion on complications related to diabetes."
One Drop is also compatible with Apple HealthKit. An Android version is planned for release.
