Eating and exercising for your blood type

Is staying healthy as simple as eating and exercising for your blood type?

Dina Khader, a registered dietitian and integrative nutrition consultant based in Mt. Kisco, N.Y., says that blood type can be a powerful indicator of what type of diet and exercise program would work best for an individual's body.

"Each blood type is your own genetic blueprint," Khader told Fox News. "As a result, the foods you eat [and] the exercise you do would all have to be different. It makes perfect sense."

And, according to Dr. James D'Amo, author of Eat Right for Your Type, each blood type — A, B, AB or O — has different types of antigens that react with your immune system, the foods you eat or the exercise you perform.

According to Khadler, participants who did a six-week workout and nutrition program based on their blood type reported better energy, weight loss and reduced stress.

Type A

Khader says that those with blood type A should avoid intense exercise, as it creates more stress in the muscles, as well as higher levels of lactic acid and cortisol. People with blood type A will probably do better with slower exercises like yoga or Tai Chi, Khadler says.

Type B

Type B individuals can do well with yoga and stress-reduction exercises, but they also can benefit from some weight-lifting and cardio workouts too.

“B is for balance,” Khader said.

Type AB

AB people should combine both exercises listed as suitable for type B and A, Khadler says.

Type O

And as for O people? They benefit from rigorous workouts, Khadler says.

"The more intense the exercise, the better they feel – and the better results they get from their workouts," she said. "They’ll end up losing more weight, burning fat, being energized. It’s a great endorphin release in the brain."
