How to have a diabetes-friendly Super Bowl

Besides Thanksgiving, it's the day most notorious for indulging in food and drink.

But for diabetics, the Super Bowl can pose a number of challenges, namely at gatherings where no healthy food options are to be found.

Deborah Clegg, a diabetes nutritional specialist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, says that it's important to have a "game" plan before sitting down in front of the chip bowl or bellying up to the bar this Sunday.

"Managing diabetes is really about making healthy food choices and controlling portions," Clegg said in a statement.

What to eat

Clegg says that it's OK to have unlimited beverages--as long as it's something like water, unsweetened tea, calorie-free diet sodas or coffee.

In terms of the main meal event, stick with grilled fish, skinless turkey or chicken, and veggie burgers or meat substitutes. Salad options are great, says Clegg, but go easy on the dressing, and opt for something that is sugar-free or low-calorie.

What not to eat

"Penalty" foods include foods like soda, potato chips or dips that are high in salt and fat. Fruit and whole grains can be consumed but sparingly and in small portions. Low- or non-fat cheeses are also OK in moderation.

Clegg also says to bring your own food if you're worried about having healthy options. If you're hosting a party, try to make healthier versions of your favorite game day staples, like nachos with hummus instead of sour cream or bean dip made from scratch.
