New Medications for Diabetics in the Making
235 New Medications
There are currently 235 new medications being researched, studied and in different developmental stages for diabetes. Eight of these prescription medications have already been submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for approval.
The majority of the remaining 50 medications are in the final stages of the development process. All 58 of these medications are being developed in the state of California. Some of the medications will target diabetes as a whole while other will target specific conditions that develop because of diabetes.
Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is an eye disease commonly caused by diabetes. Fluid leaks into the area of the eye where “clear and sharp” vision is located this fluid causes blurriness and swelling. The scientific name for this specific condition is called macular edema. Unfortunately, it can lead to blindness.
Diabetic Neuropathy
Diabetic neuropathy is another common condition that is often associated with diabetes. Neuropathy cause severe nerve damage in the feet, legs, hands and arms. The loss of control can sometimes result in an amputation.
Great News for Diabetics
Scientists and doctors are working diligently to produce medications that may help diabetics manage their diabetes better and hopefully help diabetics prevent some of the complications that can arise from diabetes. This is great news for the 220 million people in the world who are diabetic.
