How to Be an Advocate for Diabetes Awareness
Despite the fact that diabetes is a global health epidemic, many people lack a basic understanding of the condition or how it can lead to serious, life-threatening health complications.
If you or someone you know has diabetes and you would like to be an advocate for raising awareness, there are several ways to do that.
Share Your Story
Unfortunately, having diabetes – or having a loved one with the condition – can come with a certain element of social stigma. Some people might be embarrassed or fearful when it comes to speaking about the condition or the challenges associated with having diabetes.
Yet being willing to have open and honest dialogue about diabetes is one of the best things you can do to raise awareness about the disease. Sharing your story can educate and inspire others.
You can share your experiences with friends and family or offer to speak at schools or community organizations.
Get Involved
You can raise awareness of diabetes at the local or state level by participating in events or fundraisers.
Many communities have volunteer centers, diabetes camps or expos that are run by people who support the cause.
You can also participate in organized awareness programs that help to reach at-risk populations.
Another option would be to contact local, state or national politicians about diabetes awareness and policies. Visit the American Association of Diabetes Educator's website for more information.
To find a way to get involved in your local community, find a local office of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) or search for upcoming events in your area.
Raise Money
Fundraising is the backbone of diabetes awareness, as money is needed to help support advocacy organizations and efforts.
The ADA has several ways you can create an online DIY fundraising campaign through activities like bake sales, community walks or other events.
Visit the ADA's website for more ideas.
Remember that all efforts add up to a collective shift, so taking part in some type of advocacy furthers the cause and raises awareness about diabetes – however small your participation might be.
