5 Natural Ways to Treat Diabetic Foot Pain

Nerve pain is a reality for many people living with diabetes, and the feet and legs are often the biggest problems areas.

Left untreated, neuropathy can worsen over time and lead to permanent numbness and pain or even the need for amputation.

While blood sugar control and certain prescription medications may help to ease foot pain caused by diabetes, there are several natural ways to find relief:

Walking.

A simple walk around the block helps to improve circulation, increase blood flow and can improve symptoms of diabetic neuropathy.

Walking may also prevent nerve pain where it hasn't started yet, and it can slow the progression of damage.

B Vitamins.

The family of B vitamins, like B-12, B-6, and B-1, are important for many functions that have to do with nerve health.


A quality B-complex vitamin is relatively inexpensive and can be found at the local grocery or health food store.

High doses of B vitamins may actually worsen symptoms of nerve pain, however, so check with your doctor about appropriate dosages.

Chili Peppers.

Capsaicin cream, which is made from hot chili peppers, may help to relieve nerve pain. One study suggests that capsaicin has been used for centuries as a topical pain killer.

Evening Primrose Oil.

The omega-6 fatty acids found in evening primrose oil may help nerve cells to repair and regrow.

Several studies have found a link between supplementation with evening primrose oil and improved symptoms in people with diabetic neuropathy.

Warm baths.

A warm bath can be a soothing and natural way to relieve the pain associated with diabetic neuropathy. Warm water increases the blood flow to extremities and can improve circulation in the legs and feet.


Adding relaxing essential oils to the water, like lavender or peppermint, can also help alleviate stress - which may make it easier to cope with the pain.
