Type 2 Diabetes and Weight Loss

Managing diabetes is difficult enough, but having to manage your weight at the same time can be rather taxing. But when you consider the massive health benefits that can be derived from maintaining a good weight, you can see how it is well worth the effort.

Since most type 2 diabetics are overweight, it means that excess weight is not only unhealthy from a body standpoint, but it also greatly affects blood sugar, as well. Insulin is directly affected due to the increase of insulin resistance, or when the body doesn't use insulin in the correct manner. When insulin isn't managed properly, glucose is allowed to run rampant, too.

Most type 2 diabetics carry their excess weight in their midsection, which is extremely bad news on many levels. This not only helps to create such conditions as a fatty liver, but it has a direct effect on glucose levels. Sugar is not processed as easily and the excess weight puts an unnecessary strain on digestion, the heart and lung function.

But losing this excess weight does more than just improve overall health. It strengthens the heart, which in turn improves blood flow. Proper blood flow is necessary to ward off such nasty conditions as nerve damage and poor circulation. Keeping the arteries clear is also a deterrent for atherosclerosis.

When you drop weight, you will invariably have more energy. This means the likelihood that you can exercise more. More exercise means a healthier being and the chance at more weight loss.

Probably one of the most significant benefits from weight loss is the possibility of dropping your medications. Fine-tuning your body's engine is precisely what medication is intended to do. Achieving this naturally gives your doctor the chance to possibly take you off of some of your medicine which could eliminate other complications.
